What is Plastic Injection Molding?

Aerospace plastic injection molding is a versatile method for aerospace and defense parts manufacturing needs. It is typically best for high quality specifications and can be used for a range of injection molded plastic components from tiny to very large parts. The process is more complex than compression molding and therefore requires specialized expertise.

Here’s a general example of the process:

  • First, we place uncured material in to the machine.
  • Next, the injection machine will release the precise quantity of material needed into the barrel.
  • As the material moves through the barrel, it is heated, becoming more flexible.
  • The now more pliable material is then pushed into the runner system.
  • From there the material fills in the mold cavaties and the curing process begins.
  • Once the cure is completed, the part is removed and any finishing tasks take place.

Plastic injection molds are crafted to withstand great pressure, enabling a harder, strong part as a result. This pressure also helps when it comes to creating parts that are highly detailed or have complicated geometry. While the molds are engineered to each customer’s specifications, the process of creating the molds is still faster than some alternate manufacturing methods. This helps save costs and time.

More than one type of plastic can be injected at the same time as well, which can also help create products to specific needs. Because the plastic injection manufacturing process is automated, it can also save costs there.
